Return to the Source — Day 1

Youth needs space!

Every new social movement requires protected space where new ideas can be tried out and developed without external pressures and constraints. The experiments which produce enduring cultural ideas need a suitable laboratory for that initial creative explosion.

The entire city of Berlin became such a space after the fall of the Wall. People with the potential and desire to create something new and unique gathered here. They found their own free spaces in empty buildings around the city and turned them into places for experimentation. What was once a laboratory and a niche has the power to change the world.

Music can be the engine for resistance, change and growth and Detroit has always been a city of music. Detroit is the mecca of music in America. It’s time to take seriously the potential of this raw creative resource. Local lawmakers need to realize the massive benefit of a structured music economy. Music creates new opportunities wherever it goes.

The music in this city has been as world-transformational as the automotive industry but with far less institutional support and recognition. Detroit’s music has traveled as many miles around the world as its famous cars. Let’s explore how these two industries can support each other. Why not have every car advertisement filmed in this city have music featuring its many artists?

Structure the music economy to build the experimental laboratories of change. This is the lesson of the cultural awakening in Berlin at the beginning of the 1990s: give again to the young those places which do not know what will happen to them! Keep the niches where experiments can be made and the new can be tried out! Give young people the space they need to be creative!

Return to the Source 2023 is an organic evolution of the original concept, with careful attention to detail put in at every level. We’ve used this time to improve ourselves and our infrastructure, to mindfully choose what it is we want to do and share with our community. Our weekend at the Tangent includes 4 parties for the price of one weekend wristband, with an outdoor area containing a harm reduction zone, food truck, and a greater outdoor sound system. Once the music starts at No Way Back on Sunday night, it won't end until Tuesday morning — 32 hours of continuous music. A weekend wristband will allow you to experience all this with no interruptions.
